Ending Coercion

Coercion in mental health usually takes one of two forms:

  • Coercion under the law. For example, under the Mental Health Act you can be detained in hospital against your will and be forced to take medication without your consent.
  • Informal coercion where there is no legal basis for making someone comply with a regime in hospital or the community but where nurses or doctors lead you to believe that if, you do not do as you are asked, then they can make you conform. One example of this type of coercion is being told that you must take medication in the community even if you are not under a CTO (Compulsory Treatment Order).

Loud and Clear is running a campaign against coercion in mental health. Our group meets every Tuesday between 11am and 1pm. If you would like to become involved please contact us on the number below.

Alternatively, if you have any stories or would like to contribute an article about your experiences of coercion, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
