Community Treatment

Diverse therapy group sitting in circleFollowing amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983, patients who are detained in hospital for treatment can be discharged subject to a Community Treatment Order (CTO), which sets out conditions of discharge.

If a patient breaches these conditions, and in doing presents a risk to their health or safety, or a risk to others, they can be bought back into hospital. As with detention under the Act, a patient can be discharged by their responsible clinician, a Mental Health Review Tribunal, the hospital managers or their nearest relative.
