Leave from Hospital

Man raising arms in praise in green fieldAlthough the Mental Health Act allows for people to be detained in hospital, the Code of Practice states that this must be in the least restrictive way.

Even though someone may be detained in hospital, they can still be allowed to leave the ward on their own or accompanied by a member of staff if their responsible clinician agrees to this.

People detained in hospital can access support from an Independent Mental Health Advocate who can provide further information on leave from hospital, and support patients in making a request to their responsible clinician.
