Rights of voluntary patients

Whilst some patients using mental health services are subject to the compulsory powers of the Mental Health Act, most people use services voluntarily. Unless someone is subject to the Act, they are free to make their own decisions about care and treatment with the advice and support of medical staff.
If you feel that you have been forced to take medication or told to do things you didn't want to do by mental health staff, please contact our Ending Coercion campaign.
